JGirl Parties Give Regular Guys a Chance on the New York City Club Scene

If you’re a guy(and I definitely write this from that perspective), you’ve wantingly seen attractive women standing outside clubs, getting ready to gear it up on Saturday night. But enlisting a buddy to laboriously trail such a prospect seems destined to fall short due. That said, I’ve gotten access to jump the line and bypass the mojo the guys already inside surely must possess. It has come via my pen, as a NYC event planner has hired me to cover her parties and finally cure my curiosity of what’s going on inside.

Actually, I do it for free. It’s also inaccurate to say that her weekend parties at the Aspen Social Club or Latin Quarters will have you waiting on line. Say you’re on the JGirl list and they let you right in – for free. Who’s smarter than you?

Maybe Jen Santucci is. She is JGirl’s founder in this male dominated business, which in itself makes her a compelling story. But, as a guy, which is the viewpoint you are interested in, I reassert my bias.

I went to my first JGirl Party in August – the Latin Awards Pre-Party at Phucket Lounge. In anticipation overdrive, especially in wake of all the Facebook pictures, I arrived way too early.

Alone and out of my element, I wondered whether this would be another long foray from Westchester for the sake of feeling socially awkward. Soon enough, though, people began arriving. Most notably, Evelyn Torrez, who runs a modeling agency, and in tow, were several of her “Foxy Women,” all dressed up in serious model regalia.

“I hit the mother load,” I texted a buddy. Nonetheless, Evelyn seemed peaked by my endeavor and we exchanged emails. Unfortunately, she and her girls soon left, but I was a bit too intimidated anyway to engage with my pen or a feeble opening line.

Still, I knew the shyness was really a function of needing time to warm to the surroundings. Fortunately, Jen arrived and I settled in.

All well and good, but now I had (happily) unpaid work to do, and it was time to talk to New York’s finest. Christina Lima, Mayumi Loera, Andrea Arguello and Maria McIntosh were first. All models and none nearly as scary as they would have seemed standing outside a club, it was polite, friendliness that provided an opening not my sly cover story.

Interestingly, I learned Christina has her own cleaning business. Pathetically, I swooped in with a line she’s heard a million times. “I’ve never seen a cleaning lady who looks like you,” but it was logistics not a lack of originality that doomed me. They were all from North Carolina and came up just for the party.

Regardless, the burgeoning party hit its population limit with a horrible noise from a above. It began to rain without remorse and the party inflow ended. Nonetheless, I easily exceeded the nonexistent weekend female interaction ration I typically achieve in the vast cultural and social wasteland known as Westchester. I decided, this was a very good start.

Unfortunately, the promise did run into a problem. JGirl weekend parties begin at 10PM. So at 8:30, I’d have to lift myself off the coach and trek into NYC.

That’s just too late, but as I follow the Facebook thread in desperation, you should be fine. Luckily, weeknight events have kept me tied in.

In October, I attended JGirl’s second Latin Awards Pre-party. The turnout was light but success had little to do with the numbers.

I met Felix Jerez, who presides over the Latin Awards and all that goes with it. English translation : There are numerous stunning women associated with his trans-metropolitan production, and no one says you
can’t stray from Jen’s endearing grasp.

For instance, my introduction to hip-hop performer PVaz led me to Latino Magazine’s Fashion Week event at Club Amnesia on February 15th. How could you go wrong?
But back tracking before moving on, another performer at the Preparty seemed moved by my respectful and unbiased approach. We exchanged emails. She would reveal that I made her feel comfortable in my line of questioning and we’ve been emailing back and forth since. We haven’t been able to nail down a time to meet again, but no matter where it leads, there’s no reason to pass JGirl by. And the ticket is being yourself not fancy shoes, funny lines or phony stories. So get on the list – you have what it takes.

iPhone 5 rumored to be keeping to fall release schedule for 2012

iPhone 5 rumored to be keeping to fall release schedule for 2012

Apple is rumored to be sticking to a September or October 2012 release cycle for the iPhone 5 — or whatever they end up calling the next-generation iPhone — just as they did with the iPhone 4S in 2011. Japanese news site Macotakara reports:

According to Asian reliable source, the next iPhone will be released in September or October, and this cycle seems to be kept for years.

Previous to the iPhone 4S, Apple historically held to a summer release cycle, with the original iPhone hitting on June 29th, 2007. Subsequent releases of the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS were in mid July and late June respectively, with the iPhone 4 following up on June 24 of 2010.

With the iPhone 4S, however, Apple switched to a to an October release window, moving away from the summer cycle they’ve been accustomed to and taking the Holiday spot previously reserved for the iPod. Given that Apple announced a record-breaking quarter with over 37 million iPhones sold after the iPhone 4S hit consumers late last year, it was likely a smart move and it makes sense for Apple to continue on this path going forward.

iMore previously reported on an October 2012 release date for the iPhone 5.

2012 Grammy Awards Show Reminisces with Acts from the Past

Familiar names from past music eras took the stage at the 54th Grammy Awards that aired Sunday February 12 on CBS: Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, the Beach Boys, Tony Bennett and Glen Campbell.

The Boss opened the show with the E Street Band (plus string section), returning for the McCartney finale of Beatles’ songs with six guitar players (add Dave Grohl, Joe Walsh, Brian Ray and Rusty Anderson) rocking out the wrap-up. Even current act Bruno Mars chose to perform a retro-style song from his nominated album.

And the Winner Is….

Bon Iver won Best New Artist. That was Adele’s first Grammy in 2009. This time, she added six more for her album, “21″ featuring the worldwide hit singles, “Rolling in the Deep” and “Someone Like You.” Six ties her with Beyonce for most female awards in a one show. Her voice sounded as excellent as ever after her well-publicized vocal chord surgery.

Foo Fighters won five in various rock categories and Kanye West four in the rap genre. In dance and electronica, Skrillex was this year’s Lady Gaga; he took home three awards. You can find the full list of 78 winners at Grammy.com.

Tributes to Golden Oldies

Maroon 5 and Foster the People each performed classic Beach Boys’ songs to mark 50 years of that act’s distinctive California sound. Listening to the performance by remaining members of the original group was a reminder of those amazing vocal arrangements.

Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt paid tribute to Etta James and Jennifer Hudson gave a brilliant vocal performance with only piano accompaniment of one of Whitney’s most familiar songs, “I Will Always Love You” (written by Dolly Parton by the way).

The Band Perry and Blake Shelton sang Glen Campbell hits and Campbell himself ended the segment with “Rhinestone Cowboy.” The late Don Cornelius of “Soul Train” only received a verbal salute.

On the Personal Side

Even considering the impact of the Whitney Houston’s unexpected death, the 2012 show seemed low key compared to previous years. Lots of music, few awards and definitely lots of commercials. The Chipolte spot was a particular favorite, visually as well as for the track of Willie Nelson’s “The Scientist.”

Checking out the dresses, Katy Perry was not her usual wow, looking rather matronly in a blue gown and blue hair. Neither did Lady Gaga choose to go that outrageous. She was seated in front next to country artist Miranda Lambert. I was personally happy to see that the Civil Wars won two and the band I voted for in world music, Tinariwen, won for their album “Tassili.”

Is it okay to admit I am not into Nicki Minaj’s music? I certainly didn’t get the appeal of her Grammy performance any more than others I’ve seen and heard.

Earn Free Facebook Credits For Installing Apps — Of Course, There’s A Catch

Posted by Jackie Cohen on February 13th, 2012 4:58 PM

This looks pretty cool at first: Earn free Facebook Credits for installing applications on your iPhone or Android device.

AppDog offers this incentive on its website, which asks you to key in your email address or cell number so the service can send you a shortened web address for registration.

The message detects whether the recipient is using an iPhone or Android, and prompts you to log on to Facebook in order to complete the installation.

The app asks for permission to publish stories to your news feed, which offers you a pretty good clue about why AppDog gives out free Credits. They’re paying for spots in all of your friends’ news feeds.

The apps available for download all marketing offers that are simply mobile versions of the affiliate schemes one sees on the Internet. Sign up for a free trial of a subscription that will automatically bill your card if you don’t cancel within 30 days; complete lengthy surveys, and so on.

Ultimately, what AppDog pays in free Facebook Credits barely covers the amount of time one needs to spend completing an offer on this site.

Our AllFacebook Marketing Conference returns to San Francisco on June 28-29. Join us for our second conference that offers a how-to guide for marketing to Facebook’s 800 million users. Special early pricing is available for only $ 249 until this Wednesday, February 15, so register today. A full agenda will be announced soon. Keep an eye on our event site for more information

Obama Campaign Officials Defend President’s Support for Super PAC

For a brief lesson in modern U.S. politics, one need look no further than the flip-flop by the president on the issue of private political spending. In 2010, President Obama noted that a Supreme Court ruling that would allow private organizations, corporations and unions to spend unlimited amounts of money on political ads and other forms of “speech” was, in essence, a “threat to our democracy.” A couple of years later, the Obama campaign has noted that – with the president’s approval – the campaign will support a super PAC that is in favor of Obama.

Noted one senior campaign official, “We made a decision, announced last night, that we’re not going to allow for two sets of rules this election. A half billion dollars spent against the president’s re-election by Republican super PACs is not something that we take lightly, and it ultimately led to our decision that we’re not going to unilaterally disarm in this fight. Our message remains the same in terms of the type of things we’re fighting for.” In other words, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. The official added, “The president did sign off on this decision.”

A statement that came out late on Monday night by Jim Messina noted that the president still opposes the Supreme Court finding but that the Obama campaign must “face the reality of the law as it currently stands.” Messina added, “With so much at stake, we can’t allow for two sets of rules in this election, whereby the Republican nominee is the beneficiary of unlimited spending and Democrats unilaterally disarm.”

Futures fall with eyes on Greece talks (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Stock index futures pointed to a dip at the open on Wall Street on Tuesday, with futures for the S&P 500 down 0.06 percent, Dow Jones futures down 0.05 percent and Nasdaq 100 futures down 0.05 percent at 5:30 a.m. ET.

Greek leaders faced crunch talks on Tuesday to secure a new bailout and avoid a chaotic debt default, caught between European Union demands Greece accepts painful reforms now and a national strike against more austerity. Prime Minister Lucas Papademos negotiated through most of the night with Greece’s EU and IMF lenders.

On the earnings front, investors awaited results from a companies including Coca Cola Co (KO.N), Lincoln National Corp (LNC.N) and Walt Disney (DIS.N).

European shares were down 0.5 percent early, after disappointing earnings reports from UBS (UBSN.VX) and Alfa Laval (ALFA.ST) and as Greek debt negotiations dragged on.

Swiss bank UBS (UBSN.VX) predicted further weakness in investment banking after a restructuring of the business failed to prevent an earnings hit from the euro zone debt crisis and worries about the global economy.

ArcelorMittal (ISPA.AS), the world’s largest steelmaker, forecast an improvement in the first half after a weak end to last year, with a clear pick-up in North America but still concerns about Europe. The company, which makes around 7 percent of global steel, said shipments would return to the level seen at the start of last year and its mining output would continue to grow.

Oracle (ORCL.O) rejected a potential $ 272 million award against SAP (SAPG.DE) over copyright infringement allegations, opting for a new trial after a U.S. judge slashed over $ 1 billion from a previous verdict.

General Motors (GM.N) sold 246,654 vehicles in China in January, down 8 percent from a year earlier. It attributed the declined to fewer shopping days during the Lunar New Year which fell in January this year.

Taiwan smartphone maker HTC’s (2498.TW) forecast of much lower-than-expected first-quarter revenue sent its shares down by the 6.9 percent maximum on Tuesday, with attention turning to how models due for release this month may help turn around its fortunes.

BP (BP.L) said it was preparing “vigorously” for lawsuits related to its Gulf of Mexico oil spill, due to start later this month, as it unveiled a rise in fourth-quarter earnings boosted by higher oil prices and one-off gains.

Toyota Motor (7203.T) raised its full-year profit forecast more than a third as it cuts costs, trims spending and expects Japanese government schemes to boost sales, though the guidance was still some way below market expectations.

Brent crude oil rose above $ 116 per barrel to a six-month high on Tuesday as threats from Iran to ban exports to some European states stoked supply concerns.

U.S. stocks closed slightly lower on Monday as lingering questions about Europe’s debt crisis and corporate earnings overshadowed growing optimism about economic growth after a five-week rally.

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) was down 17.10 points, or 0.13 percent, at 12,845.13. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (.SPX) was down 0.57 points, or 0.04 percent, at 1,344.33. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was down 3.67 points, or 0.13 percent, at 2,901.99.

Obama presses Congress to pass aid to homeowners (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Saturday pressed lawmakers to pass his proposal to provide up to $ 10 billion in aid to struggling homeowners, saying a failure to address the housing crisis would put the rest of the economy at risk.

“The housing crisis has been the single biggest drag on our recovery from the recession. It has kept millions of families in debt and unable to spend, and it has left hundreds of thousands of construction workers out of a job,” Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address.

Obama this week unveiled the details of a $ 5 billion to $ 10 billion program that would help homeowners take advantage of record low interest rates to refinance their mortgages. The assistance would be funded by a tax on large U.S. banks.

The housing initiative was one of several ideas Obama unveiled his annual State of the Union address to Congress last week.

Obama, who clashed repeatedly with House of Representatives Republicans over budget and tax issues last year, faces an uphill battle gaining traction for his domestic agenda in an election year.

Republicans gave a cool reception to the housing plan, saying it would mean too much government involvement in a key sector of the economy.

In his address, Obama acknowledged the challenges of pushing the legislation through a divided U.S. Congress. “As anyone who has followed the news in the last six months can tell you, getting Congress to do anything these days is not an easy job,” he said.

Obama’s handling of the economy, which has seen a sluggish recovery since the 2007-2009 recession, is likely to be the top issue in the November 6 presidential election.

In a report that could be helpful to his re-election prospects, the government said on Friday that the U.S. economy created a robust 243,000 jobs in January – the fastest pace in nine months – while the U.S. unemployment rate dropped to 8.3 percent from 8.5 percent in December..
