NEW YORK | Fri May 18, 2012 10:35am EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Shorting the Facebook IPO on its first day of trading will not be for the faint of heart.

As the hottest initial public offering in recent memory, Facebook has drawn 1990s-style tech-mania interest from mom and pop investors and big institutions alike.

That intense appeal means even short-selling veterans are a bit wary, at least for now.

“I have no interest in shorting a cultural phenomenon,” hedge fund manager Jeffrey Matthews of Ram Partners in Greenwich, Connecticut, told Reuters in an email interview.

Asked if this was because such stocks trade without regard to normal market valuation, he wrote back, “Bingo.”

Short sellers looking to get in are facing an uphill battle. Traders interviewed said the stock is going to be hard to borrow, at least for a few days, and only the best-sourced hedge fund managers will able to find lenders.

A prime broker at one of the top underwriters of the IPO said the firm will not be lending shares at least until the initial settlement in three business days.

“I don’t know how many shares will be available for shorting,” said the broker, who requested anonymity. “We would only provide them once the deal has stabilized.”

The bigger-than-usual percentage of retail-investor ownership of the shares may make shorting more difficult, as those investors don’t tend to lend their shares for those who want to take a short bet.

“It will likely be difficult to get shares to borrow,” said Adam Reed, professor of finance at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

“In our research, we found that around 70 percent of IPOs are borrowable on the first day, but many of those names were only borrowable by well-placed investors.”

The stock priced at $ 38 a share Thursday.

Those who are able to short will need nerves of steel. The borrowing cost will be high, and short-sellers may find the trade hard to get out of by buying back the stock in the open market, and could face a lender calling in their shorts if the stock rallies sharply.

Still, some have started laying the groundwork to short Facebook well before trading started.

“I’m doing the legwork now and calling all the brokers,” said a hedge fund manager earlier in the week. “Goldman and Credit Suisse are our prime brokers, so I am in contact with them about this.”

“This is about as bubbly as you can get,” he said. “My mother asked me if she could get Facebook shares and she has never been interested in IPOs before. A cab driver asked me about the IPO too. That’s when you want to short it.”

The hedge fund manager asked not to be named as he expected to be involved in trading the stock on Friday.

Some hedge funds, remembering the heady days of the tech bubble in the late 1990s, have been sensing the blood in the water in the recent flurry of social media and networking IPOs, including Groupon, LinkedIn, and Zygna.

Many believe those stocks’ valuations are too high, given expectations for their growth and revenue outlook. Should shares surge to $ 70 or so in short order, it will be an opportunity for managers when the initial flurry of retail interest fades in coming days or weeks.

However, Facebook may be an exception.

“I think it’s going to be an extraordinarily successful IPO and it’s going to be a must-own stock institutionally, besides the massive retail demand, for obvious reasons – it’s the dominant factor in social media, social networking,” said Doug Kass, president of Seabreeze Partners in Palm Beach, Florida.

Kass hasn’t been afraid of shorting hot IPOs in the past – he made quick, short bets on LinkedIn in the initial days after it began trading in May 2011. That stock had a small float of just 7.84 million shares, compared with the 421 million shares Facebook sold.

At the $ 38-a-share IPO price, Facebook would trade at over 100 times historical earnings, versus Apple Inc’s 14 times and Google Inc’s 19 times.

Even among the skeptical, there is a good deal of caution in facing down what is likely to be a stampede. As economist John Maynard Keynes famously noted, the market can stay irrational longer than investors can stay solvent.

“Facebook is the kind of stock that, if you don’t like it, you simply avoid it,” said Mohannad Aama, managing director at Beam Capital Management LLC in New York.

The Benefits of Promotional Pens

The only way to get a business name out there is to invest in creative marketing campaigns. This doesn’t mean that a group has to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars on advertising. Instead, an inexpensive way to spread the word about a business and its goods is to invest in promotional items like pens. These products are inexpensive but are effective. Investing in promotional products is an affordable way to market a company’s name and build up its brand.

Affordable Marketing Tool

Promotional items are important investments because they are inexpensive. A business can buy a lot of 100 for far cheaper than any print advertisement. This is a way for businesses to cut corners and save money while still spreading the word about its name, goods, and services.

Walking Billboards

Once a promotional item is out there, a company becomes more visible. Everyone that sees the product will see the business name and logo. The more people who see the pen or promotional product, the quicker word will spread. Part of building a brand is getting the word out so that a company’s name and logo become familiar. In time, this can translate to people trusting a business name.

Thank Customers

People love free products. This is why pens are a great item to invest in. Giving these products out to customers and to people at conferences and events is something that will get a business noticed. After all, pens are useful to people of all ages and backgrounds. The more useful a product is, the more likely it is that recipients will use it at work and at home. Customer satisfaction means that people will be more likely to use a business in the future.

Promotional pens will get a business noticed in a creative and subtle manner. After all, pens are something that people always need. The right promotional materials are useful, well-designed, and inexpensive. This is why businesses need to look into making pens with their name or logo on them. Soon, these items will change hands and the company’s name will spread. This is one marketing technique that cannot fail.

Global shares fall as deepening Greek turmoil weighs

TOKYO (Reuters) – Asian shares fell on Monday after weekend talks to form a new Greek government failed and China‘s latest move to loosen monetary policy highlighted concerns its economy is faltering, prompting investors to further trim their exposure to risk.

MSCI‘s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.MIAPJ0000PUS> fell as much as 0.6 percent to its lowest in nearly four months, after shedding more than 1 percent on Friday for its biggest weekly loss since late November.

Japan’s Nikkei share average <.N225> gave up early gains to stand nearly flat at midday. <.T>

Data on Friday from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission showed hedge funds and other money managers slashed their long positions on commodities by 20 percent, or nearly $ 18 billion, as prices fell to four-month lows last week, with oil accounting for the bulk of the drop.

“It’s risk-off everywhere you look,” said Yuji Saito, director of the foreign exchange division at Credit Agricole Bank in Tokyo.

The materials sector <.MIAPJMT00PUS> was the biggest decliner in MSCI‘s pan-Asian stock index, falling 0.8 percent.

U.S. crude prices slipped 0.7 percent to $ 95.42, weighed down by China‘s slowing economy, which clouded the demand outlook, and Saudi Arabia’s call for higher oil stock levels. Brent crude eased 0.3 percent to $ 111.93 a barrel.

The euro fell to its lowest in nearly four months at $ 1.2878 and the Australian dollar fell below parity to a five-month low, dropping as far as $ 0.9996.

Risk aversion will likely benefit the dollar and the yen and keep the dollar/yen pair in tight ranges, but weigh on dollar and yen cross-pairs.

Further undermining market sentiment was a $ 2 billion trading loss by JPMorgan Chase & Co , the largest U.S. bank by assets, which raised fresh worries about the financial sector, pushing Wall Street’s KBW bank index <.BKX> down 1.2 percent on Friday. Fitch Ratings cut JPMorgan’s credit rating one notch and Standard & Poor’s revised its outlook on JPMorgan to “negative.”

“Currencies may hold steady having hit the lows earlier, but remain vulnerable to headlines out of Europe, while JPMorgan’s news could spur speculation about tighter financial regulations and prompt investors to reduce risk assets,” Credit Agricole’s Saito said.

CHINA ADDS TO RISKS

After fruitless talks on Sunday, Greek President Karolos Papoulias will continue talks with the country’s political leaders on Monday evening to try to form a government, a senior presidency official said.

The president must call a new election if a compromise is not reached, putting Athens closer on the brink of bankruptcy and possibly out of the euro bloc.

Even in Germany, anti-austerity momentum may grow after Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives suffered a crushing defeat on Sunday in an election in Germany’s most populous state.

Market reaction to China‘s weekend move to cut the amount of cash that banks must hold as reserves was muted, coming after a series recent weak data, with analysts seeing more policy action to support domestic demand.

“In our view, the cut was more intended to be a signal to the market that policymakers are on top of the situation,” said Societe Generale analyst Wei Yao.

“April data reconfirmed our view that the first quarter was not the bottom. We are still looking for two more 50 bp RRR (banks’ reserve requirement ratio), cuts this year, with the next one likely in June.”

China‘s central bank cut the RRR by 50 basis points to 20.0 percent on Saturday, freeing an estimated 400 billion yuan ($ 63.39 billion) for lending to head off the risk of a sudden slowdown in the world’s second-largest economy.

“With the situation in Europe going from bad to worse, the market is questioning whether a late, band-aid response from China is going to mend battered confidence,” said Park Ok-hee, an analyst at IBK Securities.

Asian credit markets were softer early on Monday, with the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index wider by 3 basis points.

Romney Apologizes for High School Bullying

Likely GOP Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney was forced to address a Washington Post article in which many of Romney’s prep school classmates recalled some of his pranks and more troubling behavior during his high school years. Apparently, the buttoned-up Mitt Romney that we see today was much more of a wild child in the early 1960s, and some of his classmates still have the scars to show for it. Among some of the more cruel “pranks” perpetrated by Romney, he reportedly held down a student with several other boys and cut his hair because they believed that the student was a homosexual. As it turns out, he was a homosexual and the incident troubled him throughout his life.

Romney denies any recollection of the incident and also pointed out that, in the early 60s, he was oblivious to anyone’s sexual orientation or the possibility that any of his classmates might be homosexual. In fairness to Romney, that is probably a much more accurate statement than trying to claim that he doesn’t remember specific incidents from high school. Anyone who has ever been to high school – and certainly anyone who enjoyed the level of popularity and influence that Romney seemed to hold during his days at an elite prep school – is very likely to remember most of the important details of the experience.

Many of Romney’s classmates acknowledged that he was humorous and could frequently evoke a laugh, even if it was often at the expense of others. And even those who found Romney to be mean-spirited and somewhat of a bully acknowledged that his demeanor began to change when he met his current wife, Ann, who attended the sister school nearby.

Ultimately, the high school stories are probably going to fade away – as they should. Trying to dissect events of 50 years ago isn’t going to create a discernable advantage for either party, but these are the kinds of stories that will be thrown about in the calm before the election storm, which will get into full swing later in the summer.

Tips for Finishing Your Work at Home Every Day

If you work at home, you know that it is often difficult to get all of your work done. If you have a lot of distractions or are easily distracted, you may need to use these five tips to help you as well. I have been a work at home mom since 2005 with many articles, tutorials, guides, reviews, websites, and blogs under my belt. I usually write 20 – 25 articles, guides, reviews, tutorials, and blog posts in one day. The thing is, you have to stick to it, cut out those distractions and get your work done. It use to take me all day to get 5 articles wrote until I learned how to do certain things differently. That’s why I want to share these tips with you to help you get your work done at home and not take all day.

Tip 1 – Cut the TV Off

If you have the TV on, chances are, you are not getting your work done. You can’t watch TV and do your work like you should. Say you are writing an article and it takes you 30 minutes if you have no distractions. Well, watching TV will turn that 30 minutes into an hour or more. But my favorite show is on.. I know, I have that problem too. That’s why you get Tivo or some kind of recording device on your TV to record your favorite shows. You can then watch your shows at night or on the weekend you can catch up with everything. It is also a great way to reward yourself. Tell yourself, if I get all my work done today by so and so time, I can watch one of my recorded shows tonight. That will give you that drive you need.

Tip 2 – Go in a Quiet Room

If you live in a house full of kids and they aren’t being quiet, go to your bedroom or a room that is quiet. Being in a quiet room with no distractions will help you get that work done quicker.

Tip 3 – Close Facebook and Twitter

Tip 3 may offend some people, but if you are addicted to Facebook and Twitter, close them while you are working. You would be surprised at just how much time you actually check them while you are working. Close them and you will see that your progress will speed up a lot!

Tip 4 – Turn That Instant Messenger Off

If you have an instant messenger, and don’t need it for work, turn it off. It will only be a distraction and keep you from doing your work. Your friends can talk to you later. You must get your work done or else you will be up all night doing it. That is also a great incentive, once you get all of your work done, then you can chat with people.

Tip 5 – Turn That Cell Phone Off

We all know that a cell phone can be very distracting. We use it to constantly text and call people. Turn it off until your work is finished and you won’t have to be tempted to text John back, or give Shelley a call. Let your friends and family know that you have to work and you will be cutting your phone off during work. If you don’t have a home phone, leave your phone on, but tell friends and family to call your cell only if it is an emergency between certain hours.

Keep these tips in mind and you should be able to get your work done more quickly and not work into the wee hours of the night.

Miss Universe Voted Off Celebrity Apprentice

Miss Universe got voted off Celebrity Apprentice. With the calm and coolness that defied the behavior of her teammates, a ferocious woman comedienne and an unassuming Clay Aiken, Miss Universe bided good bye as one of the final six contestants.

During one episode of Celebrity Apprentice, Miss Universe attempted to perform her job as project manager writing a commercial jingle but got shooed away mercilessly and disrespectfully. Throughout the TV reality show, the sixty-something year old woman commedienne belittled Miss Universe doutbing her intelligence and her misunderstanding of American music.

The bitter woman comedienne claimed that Miss Universe was clueless about American music and the lone male on the team, Clay Aiken agreed. Miss Universe recanted that her job as project manager would have been performed easier if both team members had shown her some respect for the position.

Donald Trump’s daughter said that Miss Universe should have supported the woman comedienne and the former American Idol 2 nd place winner even if the two showed dissenting strong personalities. The woman comedienne did not allow Miss Universe to participate in the commercial jingle performed to advertise an automobile alert service company, Mr. Sam. Clay Aiken did not allow Miss Universe as the project manager to help with the choreography.

Donald Trump asked Arsenio Hall, a former night talk show host on the opposing team, if he would replace Miss Universe with his pop star female project manager. Arsenio Hall said that he did not know enough about Miss Universe to make that decision. Then Arsenio Hall stated that he would not use Miss Universe on his team after much prodding from Donald Trump, which aided in her being voted off Celebrity Apprentice.

Miss Universe stated as she drove away in the waiting limousine that she was working for good and was disappointed that she did not win for her charity. Miss Universe showed poise, calmness and was quite cool choosing to hug the woman comedienne and Clay Aiken at the end of the television program.

Miss Universe stated that she would not stoop to disrespect and the use of swear words that the woman comedienne used to fight with her even in front of Donald Trump’s son. Never did Miss Universe burst into tears or break emotionally on camera as the woman comedienne and Clay Aiken hammered at her performance as the project manager.

Arsenio Hall team won because of the liveliness of the performance promoting the automobile alert service company. The owner of the company said the jingle was catchy and easy to remember in contrast to the conservative performance of Miss Universe’s team. None of the team members of either team was surprised when Miss Universe got voted off Celebrity Apprentice as Donald Trump allowed the bantering to continue increasing TV ratings.

Miss Universe did not appear visually in the commerical jingle until the end of the program. Her participation only included thanking the audience for watching and listening. Donald Trump praised Miss Universe on her classy cool demeanor. He stated that Miss Universe had a strong character as well as the two other team members who had shunned her throughout Celebrity Apprentice.

Although, Miss Universe got voted off the popular TV reality show, Celebrity Apprentice, Donald Trump and the TV viewing audience understood that she had won her title not only for her beauty. Miss Universe class act can not be easily followed because of her ability to control her emotions as the other team members offered only their animosity.

Miss Universe, a stunning beauty, showed the TV audience and Donald Trump her ability to articulate logically and to stay classy while getting voted off of Celebrity Apprentice beset in an hostile work environment that included Clay Aiken.

Ocean-themed Expo 2012 opens May 12 in S. Korea

The Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea — A robot fish on a scientific mission shoots lasers from its nose, its tail swinging as it swims around a tank. It’s part of an effort to showcase technology at Expo 2012, which opens for three months on May 12 in Yeosu, South Korea, with a theme focused on the ocean.

In this undated image released by Organizing Committee Expo 2012, The Big-O, a giant structure that will display hologram images, stands out from the water in the southern coastal city of Yeosu where South Korea is preparing to open Expo 2012 on May 12. The expo has a theme of oceans and sustainability, with an emphasis on technology. The event is expected to attract millions of visitors from around the world during its three-month run. Organizers have coined the term “seavilization” to promote the event in this southern coastal city. It’s the first expo to be held in South Korea since 1993, and millions of visitors from around the world are expected to attend. Its formal theme is “The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities.”

It’s also being billed as the biggest gathering of robots in the history of expos, and South Korea hopes the event will help promote the importance of technology — including robots — to develop underwater resources without harming the environment.

In addition to the robot fish with the laser-shooting nose, there is a human-like robot that smiles, cries, frowns and winks at visitors, and at another booth, a group of robots the size of schoolchildren that dances in perfect harmony to the beat of Korean pop music. Another robot that looks like a starfish crawls inside a water tank as it demonstrates its ability to detect and analyze underwater resources.

Organizers hope the expo will both capture visitors’ imagination and showcase South Korea’s eminence as a technology powerhouse. Other high-tech aspects will include submarines, LED displays and a mobile app that allows people with smartphones to access information while touring the exhibits.

In another effort to use modern technology to draw attention to the coastal setting, Yeosu has also built a gigantic round-shaped structure in the water called the Big-O to display colorful hologram images. Lasers and flames shoot from the structure, which stands about as high as a 13-story building at 41 meters tall and 35 meters wide (135 feet by 115 feet).

Yeosu is a port city 300 kilometers (187 miles) south of Seoul. It is one of the most scenic areas on South Korea’s southern coast, with 300 islands nearby. One of its biggest tourist attractions is a wide coast, submerged daily by flood tides and rich with sea life.

The expo venue offers 2.7 million square meters of space (29 million square feet). Typically countries that join the host country for these events create pavilions to showcase their own technology, culture and products related to the expo theme. This year’s participants are expected to come from 105 countries and 10 international organizations, organizers said. The organizing committee said it asked North Korea to participate, but Pyongyang has yet to respond.

Expo 2012 is a smaller exposition than the larger world’s fairs that are held in years ending in 0 and 5. Those larger events last for six months; the most recent large expo took place in Shanghai in 2010. Smaller expos, like the one in Yeosu, are held every four years for just three months and tend to be in less well-known destinations, such as Zaragoza, Spain, which hosted Expo 2008. The expos are sanctioned by the Bureau International des Expositions. The next large expo will take place in Milan, Italy, in 2015.

Kids love to play outdoors and having to sit at home all day will add up to their crankiness and irritability. Allow them some time daily to soak up some essential vitamin D and breathe in some fresh air; this will help make them feel better as well as speed up their recuperating process. CREATE A TREASURE COVE Comfort
Throw around a few pillows and create a treasure cove for you and your child to rest during the daytime. To make it more interesting for your child, stack the fortress with books, puzzles and movie DVDs. Dress up your child (only if he/she is feeling up to the mark) and treat him/her like a true prince/princess; just playing this game will definitely make your child feel better and will surely take away the sickness blues. BRING CHEER Cheer Up
Do not allow your child to get the sickness blues; instead keep boredom away with some games they will enjoy. Just to see your baby smile, try ‘horsing’ around. I can guarantee you that your child won’t show a hint of boredom with this activity. The mere presence of a smiling face can cheer up your sick child and keep the spirits soaring, by simply being there. COLLECT AND OBSERVE Hobby Ideas
A good move will be to get your child involved in your hobbies (the one’s you enjoyed as a kid!). Take out that old treasure box you have hidden in the attic and get your child to spot the different types of coins/stamps/pens that you have collected over the years. You never know your child may carry forward that legend one fine day. Probably, you could team up this activity with a gist of how you acquired the particular stamp or coin. BECOME A DUMMY Become a Dummy
Children love toys for the mere reason that the toys allow them to try out stuff with them without complaining. For a change, play a dummy with your kid, and boost your child’s creative streak. So what if you end up looking like a clown who has run away from the local circus? At least you’d have brought cheer to your child’s face. PAPER SCISSOR ALERT Get Crafty
Snip, snip, snip. There you go; give your child some colorful papers and a scissor and let him/her unleash their apparently active minds. Help out with making paper men and lanterns and use it to decorate the house. Ask your child to help out with decorating the living room or any other room with these paper cutouts. It will keep your child engaged in the activity as well as keep their crankiness at bay. PREPARE GREETINGS Prepare Greeting
If your child’s not too comfortable with scissors and cutting, then simply hand some crayons and color pencils/pens and ask him/her to prepare greetings. After all, playing with colors makes the mood vibrant, and there is absolutely no harm if the child is sitting quietly and coloring his/her way to glory. PLAY WITH TOYS Playtime
Leave your child alone for a brief period of time and let him/her play with soft toys. One of the observations made by many parents is that, allowing the child to play with toys puts them on a faster road to recovery. Besides, there’s an unspoken comfort when it comes to cuddling up with soft toys even when you’ve surpassed the age limit to play with one. COOKIE IN THE KITCHEN Cooking Together
How nice to have your sweet little cookie help you out in the kitchen! With your child’s help, prepare something he/she likes to eat. This way, the food you prepare won’t go for a waste and the two of you will have a nice time together. Allow them to have the upper hand here, as that will ensure they do not get cranky. WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE Walk Down Memory Lane
Revisit some of your fondest memories with your child by taking out old albums and scanning pictures. You can even create a mosaic of the best pictures with his/her help and use it to decorate the house. Another activity that you can do with them around is, create a music CD or DVD with your child’s selection of songs. This will surely keep his/her spirit soaring for a long time. ENTERTAIN WITH MUPPETS Entertain
Bored, eh? We will see that you won’t be anymore. One fun activity you and your child can try is make dolls out of paper foil, wool and socks. Once you’re done, ask your child to narrate a story with these dolls. You will have a nice time making them and then listening to interesting stories of your child. PLAY WITH YOUR KID Play Together
Daddy dear, make some time for your precious little one and race a toy car please. Play with your child; it could be video games or simple car races, but your child will enjoy this activity the most. You can even build a rail at home; this way, you can deliver goods to your child and he/she can return some back to you. Indulge in some board games if your child is not feeling up to the mark to move around the house. LOTS OF PAMPERING Pamper
How very nice if someone sings, ‘You are my sunshine, my very sunshine …‘ Take a guess at what will happen; your child will begin feeling better almost instantly. Now for that little smile, you can indulge in excess pampering, can’t you? It worked for me though! TUCK ME TIGHT Tuck Me Tight
Remember that your child needs rest; make it compulsory to keep time aside for rest time. During this time, you could tuck your child to bed with a nice little story or song. Cuddle up close with your child and give him/her your undivided love and attention; that’s one of the best activities your child will love doing. A little “pick-me-up” and “tuck-me-tight” time won’t take away anything from you or your pocket; and the best part is that it comes free of cost. Before signing off, I’d like to wish your child a speedy recovery; take care!

E! Network Signs Kardashians for Three More Seasons

The Kardashians are a uniquely American success story, and one that truly embodies the New American Dream. For all of their justified detractors and the cringe-worthy media coverage that is constantly promoting and regurgitating all things Kardashian, Kris Jenner and her family have managed to become real-life celebrities. Most of the fame of the family can be attributed to Kim Kardashian. She’s probably the most photogenic of a fairly photogenic family, and it was her sex tape that really launched the family name into the national spotlight.

But since that initial sex-tape boost, it’s hard to find fault with how the Kardashian family has managed their “brand”, as they like to say. In addition to several reality television series – all on the E! Network – there are clothing lines, fragrances and a growing array of products and endorsements for nearly every member of the family. People now become famous simply by being associated with the Kardashians, as surely Kris Humphries can attest.

Even bona fide celebrities like Kanye West get overshadowed by the Kardashians. Now that Kim and Kanye are rumored to be dating, the story isn’t that Kanye West is dating Kim Kardashian – the story is that Kim Kardashian is dating Kanye West. Most fans of the Kardashians are now wondering whether or not a Kim and Kanye romance is going to be a central plot line to an upcoming season of one or more of their current reality shows. Or, perhaps, maybe Kim and Kanye will get their own reality show? They certainly have the star power to make it fly.
