Apple Gives Media Executives Vague Hints about Its Television Plans
The Wall Street Journal provides some of the first hints about Apple’s internal television project. While rumors of such a project have been ongoing for years, there has been a renewed interest in it since Steve Jobs described having “finally cracked” the TV interface in his recently released biography.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has been in ongoing discussions with media executives at several large companies about their vision for the future of TV. Apple’s Senior Vice President Eddy Cue is reported to have outlined new ways Apple’s technology could be used across phones, tablets and TVs. The overall concept, however, remains rather vague. It seems that Apple has discussed a number of possibilities with executives, but stopping well short of outlining their exact vision.
Of course, voice and movement controls have been suggested, though in a long term view:
In at least one meeting, Apple described future television technology that would respond to users’ voices and movements, one of the people said. Such technology, which Apple indicated may take longer than some of its other ideas, might allow users to use their voices to search for a show or change channels.
Beyond that, Apple’s TV plans seem to revolve around wireless streaming technology to access shows and movies. The use of Apple’s AirPlay technology could allow users to control the device from their iPhone and iPad, possibly eliminating the need for a set top box. As an example, users could watch video on their TV and then move over to their iPhone or iPad seemlessly. Other sources indicate that Apple has worked on integrating DVR storage and iCloud into their future TV device.
The question of what content will be shown on the new device remains up in the air. Apple is not said to have pursued the necessary content deals at this time, though have considered the possibility of licensing content directly to create a subscription-TV service. Steve Jobs, himself, was reportedly part of these early talks as far back as 2010.
Apple’s ongoing secrecy should come as no surprise. We’ve previously reported that competitors are already “scrambling” to react to Apple’s rumored entry into the television market.

Apple adds false advertising claim to Amazon lawsuit – CNET
November 17, 2011 11:16 PM PST

Amazon’s launch of the Kindle Fire is drawing heat from Apple.
Apple, which had previously sued Amazon over its use of the term “App Store,” expanded the scope of its lawsuit Wednesday to include claims of false advertising related to the launch this week of the Internet retailer’s tablet. The amended complaint (see below), which was filed in the U.S. District Court for Northern California, alleges that since the Android tablet was unveiled in September, Amazon has begun altering its “Amazon Appstore for Android” moniker to de-emphasize the “for Android” suffix.
“Amazon’s use is also likely to lessen the goodwill associated with Apple’s App Store service and Apple products designed to utilize Apple’s App Store service by associating Apple’s App Store service with the inferior qualities of Amazon’s service,” Apple claimed in the filing, which included screenshots from Amazon’s Web site.
Amazon representatives did not respond to a request for comment.
Apple first filed its trademark lawsuit against Amazon in March, seeking an injunction against the company’s use of App Store to describe its digital download store, which sells mobile applications to users on Google’s Android platform.
Amazon responded in April by countersueing Apple, saying that “App Store” is too generic and requesting that Apple’s case dismissed. In July, a judge denied Apple’s injunction request, ruling it had not established the likelihood of confusion between the competing brands. But she also said she did not agree with Amazon’s contention that the mark is purely generic.
In addition to Amazon, Apple has squared off with Microsoft and home server software Amahi over their use of the term. Apple applied for the trademark of “App Store” in 2008, a week after the company launched its iPhone App Store.
The amended filing comes on the heels of the launch of the Kindle Fire, Amazon’s first foray into the tablet market, which has so far been dominated by Apple’s iPad. But analysts believe the Kindle Fire’s low $ 199 price tag–most tablets retail for around $ 500–could help make it the first legitimate competitor in an area where many other high-end Android tablets have missed the mark.

Ohellsyeah! iPatch, an iPhone repair company in the UK, has released a super sweet mod that brings a glowing Apple log to your iPhone. Yes, you read that right. Glowing. Apple. Logo.
Chris and Andy, the guys behind iPatch, expect the mod to retail for under £100, and a turnaround time of less than an hour. They claim the iPhone remains fully functional, with the rear glass appearing completely original with no visible alterations. The logo lights up whenever the iPhone’s screen is on.
No word yet on what this might do to battery life, but like we keep saying on the podcasts, if Apple adds this to iPhone 5, they’ll sell a billion of them.
